November Glam Bag Review

Here’s what I’ve received this month, what I LOVE, and what I’m not thrilled about.
Quick Look: *starred items* I love!

  1. Formula X Nail Polish “Huntress” – An iridescent deep emerald shade with flecks of gold. What makes this brand unique is the “shineXcel” — a luminescent ingredient that amps up shine. I’m not really a fan of this polish, mainly because of the color. I prefer light and matte shades. There are, however, 200+ colors to choose from, so I might give another color a try.
  2. Benefit Cosmetics “the POREfessional Face Primer” – An oil free, silky smooth face primer.  I used to work at Sephora where this product was very popular. It’s slightly tinted and fills in pores and lines. Overall it’s an alright primer, but I don’t love it.
  3. *Verb “Ghost Oil” – Essentially a weightless hair oil. I am pleasantly surprised by its ability to make my hair shiny without weighing it down, or making it greasy. Even after use, my hands aren’t greasy! Added bonus — this brand prides itself on using only natural ingredients, nothing synthetic. It’salso gluten, sulfate, paraben and cruelty free!— LOVE this
  4. *Elizabeth Mott Color is Bae Lip Lacquer “Moxie Mauve” – A pinky-nude, somewhat sheer matte liquid lipstick. This is another product I’m am pleasantly surprised with. I personally hate the look and feel of any type of liquid lipstick on me. (Love it on everyone else though!) For some reason, this I think this was made for people like me! It gives lips just enough color, makes them look smooth and isn’t cakey or drying! (I also layered it up to see if the color would deepen, and it did! Didn’t get cakey either!) I tried it on my lips and swatched it on the back of my hands. It doesn’t last as long as other brands, but I’m not mad about it. My only bone to pick is that there is only 5 colors to choose from!! — LOVE this, and would repurchase again if there were more colors to choose from!
  5. *OFRA Cosmetics “Banana Powder” – A pressed banana colored powder claimed to be a “…concealer, highlighter, setter and more” — and it does exactly that! I used it to conceal redness on my cheeks, highlight under the brow bone, and set under the eyes! The only thing to be leery of, is that if you use the wrong brush, or apply too much, you’ll look jaundice — not cute. The packaging is great. Most of my powdered products are kept in magnetic palettes, making this just perfect. (If you don’t work out of palettes, then this is probably annoying). Overall, I LOVE this— and would repurchase!!

Get the Look | Dose of Colors + House of Lashes

Get the Look

This is what I like to call my “Doe-Eyed” look – wide and bright eyes. Featuring Dose of Colors Eyedeal Duo in the shade “Shell” and House of Lashes in “Smokey Muse.”

Rose gold blended with warm colors on the eyes and matte skin. This look can easily be worn during the day and at night. Keep reading for details on this look.

Makeup

the Eyes: *Dose of Colors Eyedeal Duo in the shade “Shell”, Makeup Geek Eyeshadow “Peach Smoothie”, Anastasia Beverly Hills Eyeshadows “Sienna,” “Smoke” and “Noir,” Urban Decay 24 Hour Liquid Liner in “Perversion,” House of Lashes “Smokey Muse”.  The Brows — Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Powder Duo in “Medium Brown”, set with brow gel.

*Dose of Colors, Eyedeal Duo – This is a newer product that I’m experimenting with. I purchased “Shell,” which looks like a rose gold tone. Each duo comes with a primer and loose pigment of the same color, so that when used together, you get great color impact and a beautiful sparkle.

the Lips:
Buxom Lip Polish “White Russian”

Exfoliate your lips prior to applying any lip products — this gives a smooth and fuller looking lip. Exfoliants you have on hand: a toothbrush, white sugar mixed with vaseline or brown sugar mixed with honey and olive oil.

the Skin: apply MakeUp ForEver Mat Velvet Foundation in Shade “30” with a damp beauty blender, conceal with Urban Decay “Naked Skin Weightless Complete Coverage Concealer” , set with Laura Mercier “Transluscent” Setting Powder and bronze the skin with Benefit Hoola Matte Bronzer.

Hair

Beachy Waves: start with Fav4 “Twice as Thick” cream and apply it to towel dried hair. Blow dry hair from roots to ends — use a round brush around your hairline to smooth any fly-aways. With the Bellami “6-in-1 Complete Curler Set” use the 25 mm barrel and wrap hair in 1” sections around the wand. After all hair has been waved, flip your head upside down and with your fingers, comb through to loosen the waves.  Finish with  Fav4 “Texture Takeover” to create a messy, texturized and voluminous hold.

Red Lips

Get the Look

When it comes to my own makeup, I’m all about the eyes. Now this doesn’t mean that I’m slacking in other areas, it just means that I try to make them the focal point — the first thing people notice.

Today, thought it’d be fun to change up the ‘focal point’.  What better way than a sleek and classic RED lip.

the Lips: Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick in “American Doll” + Buxom Lip Polish ” Cherry Flip – Red Poppy”

1. Comb brow hairs into place.  With a small angled liner brush, dip into the darker brow powder. Draw a thin line by starting directly above the corner of your eye (about 1/2” in from the center). *Tap off excess product to avoid fallout.

2. Dip angled brush again in the darker shadow, then with small upward strokes, blend from the line you drew in the same direction that your natural hair grows.

3. With the lighter brow powder shade*, dip angled brush, tap off excess shadow, then underline the first 1/2” and blend upwards. Brows are naturally lighter towards the center of the face and deepen in color towards the end.

4. With a concealer brush, dip into concealer or foundation then underline your entire brow. Blend the excess concealer downward into skin to avoid harsh lines.

5. Using a disposable mascara wand or spoolie, comb excess concealer upwards into the brow – this creates a “natural” looking fade. If you prefer a more clean cut brow you can skip this step.

6. Set the concealer with a foundation powder or eye shadow and small dense brush.  Optional* use a brow gel or wax to set brow hairs and products.

Tips + Tricks

*If using one color — For the soft underline, after dipping into the powder apply your first stroke on the back of your hand or paper towel to achieve a lighter line.

Color too dark? Too much product applied? Use a disposable mascara wand to comb and fade out until your ideal color is achieved.

Use a lighter colored concealer or foundation to make your brow bone appear lifted and brighter. Or, try a highlighter or light satin colored shadow to add a brighter highlighted affect.

Want even thicker and darker brows? Try a tinted brow gel like this one from Anastasia Beverly Hills.

Tips for Choosing a Wedding Hairstyle

Four things to think about when choosing your Wedding Hair
Inspiration, Hair Type, the Dress and Location

Inspiration

We’ve all been dreaming of our wedding day and the way we’d look since we were kids. Sadly, your pony tail “updo” and pillow case veil won’t make the cut. How do you get inspired? Take a look at your favorite celebrities, red carpet events, magazines, Pinterest and even pictures of friends who’ve recently been married.  My inspiration tends to come from my favorite tv shows. I spend more time pausing and taking photos of hair and makeup than watching the actual show.   Narrowing to 2-3 pictures of your inspiration look will make it more clear to your stylist, what you’re trying to achieve.

Beachy Waves - Tease and Makeup

Hair Type

Use your hair to your advantage!  If you have and love the natural curls in your hair, work with them. Highlighted hair has dimension and a contrast of colors – making it look amazing in an updos. Coarse textured hair? No problem! This is my favorite hair to work with — it tends to hold a style best!

Length, texture and thickness are HUGE factors in achieving your style. When choosing your look, don’t set yourself up to be disappointed. Hairdressers don’t have fairy dust or a magic wand. When looking at photos, though you can’t feel the texture or thickness, make note of the length and color. Doing this, you’ll have a realistic idea of what your hair can look like.

Be encouraged, if your hair type is slightly limiting you from your ideal look, extensions are one example that add instant length and thickness! *My favorite extensions to work with are from Bellami, 100% Human Remy Hair, easy to apply, and extremely discreet.

Dress + Accessories

Your hair should compliment your gown and not interfere with it. As a general rule, the dress, hair, and makeup should all complement each other and not compete.

Carmi Moore, a Personal Stylist, Fashion Consultant and close friend gave me her professional opinion when it comes to choosing your wedding hair.

She says “Everything you do on your wedding day should compliment you and your unique self. Just like the colors compliment your theme, your hair should compliment your dress.  If your dress is vintage and lacey keep the hair delicate to accentuate the beauty of the dress. Allow the hair to frame your face, while keeping the look romantic. If you decide on the princess fairytale style dress then glam it up! Don’t be shy! Hair can take away from the splendor of a detailed dress or one with a long train, an updo is perfect for these types of dresses. If your dress is elegantly simple, then let your hair be the same. Try for an effortless look with loose curls that are nothing less than breathtaking. No matter what you choose, let it be you. Always be the best version of who you are, forget who did what, close your eyes and imagine what makes you feel the most beautiful, and do that!”  Love my girl Carmi — check out her website for more styling tips.

Fishtail Braid - Tease and Makeup

Location

Are you getting married on a warm sandy beach in the summer? Maybe try a boho fishtail braid.  In a cozy rustic barn in the fall? Try a low and loosely curled bun. At the Plaza in New York City?  Perhaps something more sleek and elegant.  Choose a look that is cohesive with your location.

Now this is the fun part! Grab a cup of coffee and start searching your favorite looks. You want to look like the best version of yourself on your wedding day. Need some fresh inspiration? Check out my Beauty Pinterest page.
